How to use this calculator

  1. 1Check the live price at the top, and switch the currency if you need a different one.
  2. 2Weigh your item on a scale accurate to at least 0.1 g, then enter the weight and pick the matching unit.
  3. 3Select the purity. Most jewellery is hallmarked, so look for 375, 585, 750, 916 or 999, which map to 9K, 14K, 18K, 22K and 24K.
  4. 4Add each piece to the list to build a running total, then use the percentage box to check an offer against it.

How it works

Every calculation reduces to one line. Your weight is converted to grams, multiplied by the purity's fineness to get the pure gold content, then multiplied by the spot price per gram:

value = grams × fineness × (spot price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1034768)

The divisor is the exact number of grams in a troy ounce, the unit gold is quoted in worldwide. The spot price on this page refreshes automatically once a minute, and when it does, every row in your list and the total re-price themselves, so you never have to re-enter anything.

Spot is the price for immediate delivery of pure, wholesale-quantity gold. It is a benchmark, not a retail price: coins and bars sell above it and scrap is bought below it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does karat actually mean?

Karat measures how much of an alloy is pure gold, out of 24 parts. 24K is essentially pure, 18K is 18 parts gold to 6 parts other metal (75%), 14K is 58.3%, and so on. The calculator multiplies your weight by that fraction, because only the gold content carries the spot price.

Why is a troy ounce different from a normal ounce?

Precious metals are traded in troy ounces, which are 31.1035 grams. The everyday (avoirdupois) ounce used for food is 28.3495 grams, about 10% lighter. Spot prices are always quoted per troy ounce, so mixing the two up overstates or understates value noticeably. Both units are in the dropdown.

Why would a dealer pay me less than this figure?

This is melt value: what the gold content is worth at spot. A buyer has to refine the metal, carry the price risk and make a margin, so offers usually land somewhere between 70% and 95% of melt depending on quantity and karat. That gap is exactly what the percentage tool below the list is for.

What is the percentage calculator for?

Enter the percentage a buyer has quoted (90%, 85%, whatever it is) and it shows the cash figure. By default it works from the total of your list, but you can pick a single item from the dropdown to check one piece on its own.

Do you store what I enter?

No. There is no account and nothing is sent to a server. Your list is kept in your own browser's local storage so it survives a page refresh and switching currency, and clearing it removes it for good.

Gold purity across the eurozone

European jewellery is usually stamped with its fineness (parts of gold per thousand) rather than a karat number. The stamp maps straight onto the purity dropdown above: 333 is 8K, 375 is 9K, 585 is 14K, 750 is 18K, and 999is 24K. If your piece carries a three-digit number in an oval or a shield, that is the number you want.

What is common varies by country. German and Austrian jewellery is often 333 or 585; Ireland follows the British convention and marks 9ct and 18ct; France, Italy and Spain lean towards 750, with Italy also using 585 heavily for export. The Netherlands, Belgium and Portugal cover the same range. Whichever it is, the calculation is identical; only the fineness you select changes.

There is one euro gold price, and it applies in all twenty eurozone countries: Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Ireland, Portugal, Finland, Greece, Slovakia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Latvia, Estonia, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Malta and Croatia. What differs between them is what a dealer will pay, not what the metal is worth. Note too that gold is quoted worldwide in US dollars, so the euro figure here is the world spot price converted at the live EUR/USD rate, and it can move on the exchange rate alone.
